Oakwood Theme Park Hosts Primary School Cross Country Race
Oakwood Theme Park is to host the 23rd annual Pembrokeshire Primary Schools Cross Country event on Thursday, October 17th from 2pm.
The event attracts competitors from across the county, with hundreds of youngsters taking part at different age levels from more than 40 schools.
This year the theme park will be providing hot food and drinks for spectators, there will be special offers and Oakwood’s costume character Scorch the dragon will be helping to present the winners’ prizes.
Last year more than 900 competitors from 42 schools enjoyed the challenging conditions, and organisers are hoping this year’s races will attract even more entrants.
Oakwood Theme Park’s Dominic Jones said: “The cross country event is always an extremely popular and fantastically well-organised competition which attracts schoolchildren from all over Pembrokeshire.
“Following on from comments last year, we have decided to provide spectators with the opportunity to purchase hot food and drink and we’re looking forward to welcoming competitors, teachers and families to the park.
“Hopefully some of these youngsters will go on to perform at the very highest level but this event is also a great way to introduce younger children to the world of sport and all it has to offer,” he added.
The first race will be for year three girls starting at 2pm, followed by year three boys then in the order year four, five and six girls and boys.
The first three across the line in each race will receive medals gold/silver/bronze and the following seven places up to 10th place receive race medals, every competitor receives a certificate.
Each year’s winning team – the first three finishers for each school count – receive a team trophy and overall champions receive the Perpetual Shield.
The race will be run and officiated by volunteers from Pembrokeshire Harriers and local schools.
Organiser Pete Freeman said: “I would like to thank Oakwood Theme Park for once again allowing us the use of their grounds for the event.
“It is still as popular as ever with the children, schools and the parents and we hope to make sure it continues to be just as successful in the future.
“Since the inauguration of the event many youngsters have gone on to win Welsh Schools’ and Welsh Athletics’ vests in cross country and track events.
“Some have gone further; winning Welsh/Celtic and English AAA championships. It is easily the biggest primary school sporting event in the county,” he added.
